“There will be No Wild Animals except in menageries.”
John Elfreth Watkins Jr.
Civil engineer and Smithsonian curator · United States
The world at the time.
Watkins's century-ahead article paired technological abundance with the elimination of wild animals, rats and mice. The severe wildlife losses of the nineteenth century made decline visible, but his universal conclusion exceeded that evidence.
What happened.
Wild animals continued to live outside zoos at the 2000 deadline. Yellowstone alone retained a wild bison population, decisively contradicting the universal claim.
Predicted vs actual.
| Metric | Predicted | Actual | Variance / caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild animals outside menageries in 2000 | None | Wild Yellowstone bison and many other populations remained | Universal elimination did not occur |
The counter-signal.
The 1872 Yellowstone statute already required the government to protect fish and game from wanton destruction and commercial capture. Conservation institutions therefore supplied a visible alternative to uninterrupted extermination before Watkins wrote.
Verdict.
Reasoning: poor · Outcome: wrong
This is a clear failure of an absolute forecast, despite real extinctions and biodiversity losses. One surviving wild population is sufficient to falsify the claim; later conservation success does not erase earlier ecological damage.
Cause of death / explanatory lens.
The lesson.
Does the forecast allow people and institutions to respond to the trend?
